The First Child Society, Inc. ("FCS") is a federally tax exempt 501(c) (3), not-for-profit organization. The organization’s stated purpose is simple but at the same time epic in its scope: "to
improve the health and education status of children of African-descent
throughout the Diaspora."
Africa has experienced the least of the benefits of the advancements achieved during the last century. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that the birth of FCS was inspired by a visit to the town of Ejisu, Ghana, West Africa. In July 1997, the founder of FCS and a group of other African descendants had the privilege of meeting the high school students of this town.
The group was impressed with the academic excellence demanded by the teachers and the pride that the students took in their school. At first, such an observation would seem unremarkable. What is remarkable, however, is the environment in which these young people thrived. Imagine the worst school in New York or any other American city, and then imagine how poor conditions would have to be at Ejisuman Secondary School for its students to perceive the American school as a palace compared to their own. The Ejisuman Secondary School had no electricity, no blackboards, no computers, few textbooks and general supplies and a small staff of teachers. On that day, the group made a pledge to help those students reach their potential as future leaders.
